The UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention is co-sponsoring the 15th Annual Summer Public Health Research Videoconference on Minority Health on June 9. This year’s conference theme is “Breaking the Cycle: Investigating the Intersection of Educational Inequities and Health Disparities.”
Nicholas Freudenberg, an urban public health expert, will address school dropout as a public health issue during the conference. Freudenberg will also be meeting with HPDP researchers and community partners during his visit.
HPDP Assistant Director for Community-based Participatory Research, Alexandra Lightfoot, served on the conference planning committee. The cross-campus planning included representatives from the UNC American Indian Center, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC Director of Diversity Education and Assessment from the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, NC Institute of Public Health and the Director of Wellness at Campus Health Services, among others.
“We hope the videoconference will reach community organizations, schools and universities from across the country and that we’ll have participants (both remote and local) who are researchers, students, teachers and community organizers,” said Lightfoot.
The organizers expect at least 2,100 participants, including 50 group registrations in 24 states. Featured speakers include:

This interactive session will be broadcast with a live audience in the Tate-Turner-Kuralt auditorium at the UNC School of Social Work and can be viewed over the Internet (webcast) and (tentatively) c-band satellite. Questions will be taken from studio and broadcast participants by email and toll-free telephone.
Along with HPDP, other sponsors of the videoconference include the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health Minority Health Project, UNC Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, and NC A&T State University Institute for Public Health.
