The purpose of the Wake to Wellness Grants Program is to provide funding to Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) elementary schools to implement programs that help meet one or more nutrition and/or physical activity requirements of state, district, and local school wellness policies.

Project Description

Elementary schools in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), year-round and traditional, are encouraged to apply. Proposals must address nutrition and/or physical activity requirements of state, district, and/or local wellness policies. Although grant proposals may also address staff wellness, proposals must have a primary focus on student health. Before applying, schools are strongly encouraged to form a local school wellness committee consisting of school administrators, classroom teachers, food service staff, physical education teachers, school counselors, school nurses, parents, and community members. This type of committee allows for a coordinated approach to school health that can be helpful in identifying school needs and writing a more comprehensive grant proposal. The Request for Applications (RFA) was released on January 8, 2007 and applications were due on February 16, 2007. The RFA was sent out to all WCPSS elementary school principals, PE teachers, and PTA presidents via courier and email.

Applications were received by the Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and reviewed by a committee comprised of individuals representing school health and administration, nutrition and physical activity research, health policy, and health-focused community groups. Members of the WCPSS School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) also served on the review committee. Fifteen elementary schools were selected to receive a Wake to Wellness grant and programs will begin on July 1, 2007. A list of awarded programs can be found on the Wake to Wellness website.

Awards will be given to approximately 15 elementary schools for up to $10,000 per year for three years ($30,000 per school). The grant period will begin on July 2, 2007 and end on June 30, 2010. Funding for this program comes from the John Rex Endowment. The Endowment supports visible and measurable improvements in the health of children and youth by improving access to health services, by promoting healthy behaviors and by providing opportunities for growth and development. The Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention is responsible for the administration of these grants funds.
