Project Title

Arthritis Management & Wellbeing Research Network (AMWRN) Coordinating Center & Collaborating Center

Funding Dates

09/30/2024 – 09/29/2029

Description

More than 53 million adults in the United States have arthritis, the most common form of which is osteoarthritis (OA). Arthritis is debilitating and costly, and underrepresented groups, including Blacks, Latinos, and rural populations, are disproportionately impacted. Arthritis is primarily managed in primary care, with guidelines recommending self-management strategies like physical activity, weight management, and evidence-based interventions. While healthcare provider counseling and referrals can improve patient engagement, these interventions are underutilized.

To advance arthritis research, solutions, and outcomes in service of improving the lives of adults with arthritis, the Arthritis Management & Wellbeing Research Network (AMWRN) will exchange programmatic and scientific information, plan and conduct collaborative research and evaluation, translate research into practice, and widely disseminate findings. In addition to serving as the Coordinating Center for the AMWRN, Dr. Leigh Callahan and the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance will also conduct arthritis research as a Collaborating Center. The focus of their research will be to test, refine, and scale a healthcare provider-driven intervention that leverages provider education and resources to facilitate patient engagement with arthritis appropriate, evidence-based interventions.
