Description
Be CALM (Cool, Attentive, Logical, and Mature) is a counseling program based on mindfulness and designed to help middle schoolers deal with stress in healthier ways. This study will develop and pilot Be CALM in thirteen diverse rural middle schools in central North Carolina to help school counselors address stress-related needs of middle school students.
The goals of this study are to (1) provide opportunities for middle school counselors to learn more about using mindfulness in their practice, support students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, and affirm students’ multiple identities, and (2) test and refine the Be CALM program with counselors and middle schoolers. The researchers will measure students’ stress levels, academic performance, and overall wellbeing before and after completing Be CALM.
