TEACHING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF NUTRITION
GILLINGS SCHOOL OF GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH
Lamis Jomaa is a Teaching Assistant Professor with the Department of Nutrition in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Jomaa’s research, teaching, and community service are focused on addressing food and nutrition security among underrepresented groups and designing evidence-base community nutrition interventions that aim at reducing health disparities and inequities while improving overall nutrition and health outcomes.
Dr. Jomaa’s main research interests include the interlinkages between food security, nutrition, refugee health, and sustainable diets. She uses mixed method research approaches to evaluate the burden and determinants of food and nutrition insecurity experienced by vulnerable groups, including women, children, refugees, displaced individuals, and underrepresented communities in the US and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Dr. Jomaa’s research work has also focused on characterizing the dietary intake of children, adolescents and young adults. More recently, her work has also expanded to evaluating the environmental impact of dietary choices among adolescents and adults, and exploring their knowledge, attitudes and practices towards sustainable and healthy diets. Other research projects that Dr. Jomaa has been leading in the US focus on evaluating the role of campus and community food pantries in alleviating food and nutrition security among youth and young adults. She continues to build strong partnerships with international and local academic institutions, humanitarian agencies and local non-profit organizations in the US and the MENA region.
Dr. Jomaa is a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Nutrition, Fulbright Association, World Economic Forum Young Scientists, and the Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program at the National Academies of Sciences.
Dr. Jomaa will be teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at the Department of Nutrition including NUTR 992 (Nutrition MPH Integrative Learning Experience), NUTR 470 (Foundations of Nutrition Interventions) and NUTR 770 (Clinical Trials in Nutrition).
