Dr. Hung-Jui Tan is an Associate Professor of Urology at UNC, specializing in urologic oncology. His research focuses on enhancing decision-making and risk communication to improve cancer care delivery and patient outcomes. Dr. Tan’s recent endeavors include the design and implementation of visual decision support to enhance surgeon decision-making, supported by an American Cancer Society Mentored Research Scholar Grant entitled “Designing visual tools to enhance cancer surgeon decision-making.” Dr. Tan also serves as the Co-Principal Investigator for GRADE-SRM (NCT03819569), a clinical trial that studies the feasibility of obtaining accurate genomic information through renal mass biopsy and the impact of renal mass biopsy on clinical decision-making. Based on this trial, Dr. Tan and team are developing tailored approaches to communicating information about small renal masses to patients through a Department of Defense Idea Development Award entitled, “Personalizing kidney cancer information to support patient-centered decision making.”

Dr. Tan’s expertise stems from comprehensive training in health services research and urologic oncology. During his residency at the University of Michigan, he developed proficiency in administrative claims, large dataset analysis, and econometric techniques. He furthered his education through post-graduate training at UCLA, completing the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program and a Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship. At UCLA, he received formal training in advanced statistical methods and earned a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management. Additionally, he expanded his methodological toolkit with training in patient-reported outcomes, qualitative methods, quality improvement, community-based participatory research, and implementation science.

Clinically, Dr. Tan specializes in the management of prostate, kidney, bladder, and testicular cancer and performs complex open and robotic surgeries. Dr. Tan also serves as the Director of Urologic Oncology in the Department of Urology as well as the Co-Director of the Urologic Oncology Program in Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has spearheaded multiple programs and initiatives to improve access and quality in the delivery of urologic cancer care both at UNC and across the state.
