Project Title

North Carolina Green Cart Program

Funding Dates

1/2011-9/2016

Description

The Green Cart Program created strategic partnerships to develop a system for aggregating, packing, and delivering affordable boxes of fresh North Carolina-grown fruits and vegetables to lower-income and underserved communities. The program was designed to increase access to local produce for disadvantaged groups in Orange, Durham, Wake, and Lenoir Counties through weekly community-based deliveries of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition to delivering low-cost foods to convenient locations, the program increased knowledge of fresh food cooking skills and nutrition information through site-based demonstrations. HPDP worked with food aggregation partners to purchase and provide access to seasonal produce, focusing on foods provided by small- and medium-scale farmers in North Carolina, especially those minority farmers transitioning from tobacco.
