A research collaboration between the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) and RTI International has been selected as a prime contractor to support state and local public health actions to prevent and control diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and associated risk factors and to promote the school health program.

The new contract was awarded to HPDP by the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) to support efforts to prevent and control chronic disease and promote school health. The contract will provide up to $25 million over five years and will be awarded as Indefinite-Deliverables-Indefinite-Quantity (IDIQ) contracts to seven different eligible institutions.

In 2013, UNC and RTI established the Consortium for Implementation Science (CIS) to improve health by conducting research and designing effective strategies for implementing and scaling up programs, policies, and innovations. The new contract will utilize the CIS and combine with expertise from HPDP RTI, and small business partners to respond quickly to service requests.

Alice Ammerman, DrPH, director of HPDP and professor in the department of nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health, will lead the team. The contracts will focus on four domains: epidemiology and surveillance; environmental approaches; health system strategies and community-clinical linkages.
